Infection Prevention and the Health Care Built Environment: Why Design Matters
  • Tiffany Kesinger, BSN, RN, CIC - Infection Preventionist, The University of Kansas Health System
Tiffany Kesinger, a graduate of Oklahoma Wesleyan University, is a registered nurse with 25 years of experience. In 2009 she began her career in Infection Prevention and has been Board Certified in Infection Prevention since 2011. She has been on the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Team at The University of Kansas Health System since 2016.

During her career in Infection Prevention, Tiffany has implemented processes to reduce central line, urinary catheter, and surgical site infections. She was also involved in the building of a tornado-safe alternate care site and radiation oncology addition. Her current focus at The University of Kansas has been Ambulatory Clinics, including accreditation readiness, high level disinfection, and a variety of construction projects ranging from single room repairs to construction of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. She is on a team of IPs who have developed a healthcare orientation for construction contractors, participates in Pre-Construction Risk Assessments and ongoing IP rounding and multidisciplinary construction meetings.

Tiffany is active in the Greater Kansas City chapter of the Association for Professionals in Infection Prevention (APIC) and was just elected to the National APIC Nominating and Awards Committee. She also participated with the FGI Infection Prevention Topic Group for the upcoming revision cycle. She has been a speaker at Infection Prevention conferences regionally and nationally.
Abstract & Learning Objectives

The field of Healthcare Construction continues to grow exponentially. According to The Joint Commission, "Protecting patients from harm involves more than safe treatments and procedures. We must also consider where patients receive care, and minimize risks associated with the physical environment." From disaster preparedness, emerging infectious diseases, and healthcare associated infections, the impact of design in healthcare construction is crucial.

  • Justify design features that contribute to prevention of diseases transmitted through air, water or through surface contact.
  • Identify at least one pathogen for which the physical environment can play a significant role in preventing transmission.
  • Build key practices during construction that can prevent the spread of infection.
  • List 4 elements of a Safety Risk Assessment.
