Program:With the implementation of SB 7 in January 2002, and the flip of an electric switch brought a new level of complexity and accountability to residential, commercial and industrial customers alike. The electricy market in Texas deregulated under a unique, untested set of rules found nowhere else in the US, but over the course of the past 13 years has proven to be the most vibrant and economically viable market in the US. The attractive structure of the market with low barriers to entry invited countless retail electric providers and provided ground for creation of many others, all of which resulted in intense competition amoung retail and wholesale suppliers and ABC channels. The physical structure of the ERCOT market, sometimes called an energy island, and its heavy dependence on natural gas bring its own challenges, but also offers great benefits some of which you are enjoying today. Energy commodity prices are at their lowest point since deregulation, and the market offers some great long term buying opportunities for all classes of energy consumers. The program will cover key points that highlight the success/complexity of a deregulated market. The key points to be addressed are: overview of electricity deregulation in Texas, uniqueness of Texas power market, retail landscape and market discussion.
