HAAHE Presents:
Energy Management Journey at UT MD Anderson
Arnold Granger, P.E., CEM, Director of Energy Management for UT MD Anderson & Dr. Yeqiao Zhu, PE, MBA, Director of Facilities for UT MD Anderson Healthcare Main Campus
November 13th at 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM
Crowne Plaza, Reliant Park/Medical Center
8686 Kirby Drive, Houston, TX 77054
Program:
Hospitals, clinics and medical research facilities are facing uncertain futures as reimbursements and grants decline and expenses increase. The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) has reported that energy and utility consumption could make up as much as 50% of a typical hospital’s operations and maintenance budget. At UT MD Anderson (UTMDA) Cancer Center, the utility/energy spend averages $1M per week or about 25% of the Facilities Management annual budget. All indications point towards increasing utility and energy costs for the future. Thus, energy management is a major point of emphasis for MD Anderson facilities.
Along with many other healthcare institutions, UTMDA has been pursuing a wide range of energy conservation measures over the last 10 years and in particular for the past 5 years. These efforts have resulted in improving UTMDA’s energy utilization index (BTUs/GSF) by approximately 35% while building space has more than doubled over the same time period. A total of over $7 million in energy costs have been saved in the past 5 years through energy management efforts.
This program will provide an overview summary of UTMDA’s activities relative to utility management and energy conservation by discussing the following topics:
- General Overview of UT MD Anderson Cancer Center
- Utility Providers and Spend
- Energy and Utility Trends
- Energy & Sustainability Initiatives
- General Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs)
- Specific Examples of Capital and Non-Capital ECMs
- Energy management implementation strategy, guiding principles and team collaboration
- Innovative energy solutions for healthcare environment
- High performance sustainability
- Energy and cost savings
